Crisix: The Menace-2011.

Crisix is a thrash metal band from Igualada , Spain . It was founded by Javi Carrión and Marc Torras as drummer and bassist, respectively. Although they would not take long to complete the formation with guitarists Marc Busqué and Albert Requena, and finally with Juli Baz, who would enter to replace the first vocalist.

Beginnings (2008—2009)

Crisix was born in February 2008 under the name Crysys. [ 1 ] The band was formed at the hands of Javi Carrión and Marc Torras (former members of Shadon). To search for the other components, they turned to other colleagues from local bands, and that’s how Marc Busqué (ex-guitarist for Helltears) and Albert Requena (ex-guitarist for Face) entered. The first singer of the band could not attend the presentation concert, and they decided to replace him with Julián Baz (bassist of the Bourbon Society). The group realized that Juli’s voice better fit the style that the band was looking for and decided to propose her the position of singer, thus closing the line-up. [ 2 ]

After having won the national contest, Martohell Metal Rumble 2008, the band decided to record their first single “Dead by the fistful of violence” in the summer of 2008 at Akord’s Studio in Igualada , to be included in the compilation Spain Kills by the Xtreem label. Music . [ 3 ]

In December of that same year they recorded another two songs “Internal Pollution” and “Mummified by society”, also at Akord’s Studio in order to have their first demo “Demonsthrashion” and thus be able to present themselves in the W: O: A Metal Battle Spain 2009 contest. . [ 4 ] once won the Spanish semifinal, the band traveled to Germany in 2009 to participate in the international final. They competed alongside 19 other bands from around the world and won by majority vote of the jury. [ 5 ]

Thanks to that victory, the band got a record deal with Wacken Records to record their first album “The Menace” at Stage One Studio in Germany, as well as its worldwide distribution. They also got sponsorship from brands like Washburn and Eden, as well as a European tour.

The Menace (2010-2012)

At the beginning of 2010 the band was working with Waldemar Sorychta ( Sodom , Lacuna Coil , Moonspell , Tristania , Samael ) to pre-produce the album, [ 6 ] but weeks later the record company communicated to the band that they could not take over. album together with its promotion, therefore they had to finish production and record the album on their own in November 2010 at “Axtudio” in Barcelona . After two months of hard work the band traveled to Germany in February to mix and master the album at Stage One Studio with Andy Classen. [ 7 ]Marc Busqué at the Asaco Metal Fest 2013 .

A few months before releasing their first album, the multinational Sony advised them that they could not continue with their first name Crysys due to legal problems with the video game Crysis . Seeing the situation, the band was forced to change their name to Crisix. [ 8 ]

On Friday May 13, 2011 the band met with Kaiowas Records to sign their first record deal. [ 9 ] The long-awaited album The Menace had a release date of September 26, 2011 and has twelve songs, plus a bonus track of “Ultra Thrash” with the collaboration of members of Angelus Apatrida and ’77 . On February 21, 2012 the video clip for “Ultra Thrash” was released. [ 10 ]

Rise … Then Rest (2013 — present)

The group began recording their second album on November 6, 2012 at Moontower studios in Barcelona with Javi Félez (Graveyard) as producer and engineer. The mixing and mastering was carried out by Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel ) at his Mana Recordings studios ( Cannibal Corpse , Nile , Agnostic Front , Malevolent Creation, Fueled By Fire) from Florida . [ 11 ]

The first single from the new album, “Bring ’em to the Pit”, was released on April 10, 2013 as a promotional video. [ 12 ] Subsequently, on April 30, the band released their second album Rise … Then Rest , which reached number 63 on the Top 100 albums in Spain list . [ 13 ] In May, Crisix started the tour Tour Rest Then you will take them all over the country in 2013. [ 14 ]

I am going to start this review by saying this is one of the best albums that i had the chance to listen to. Spain has given us a lot of awesome thrash bands in the past few years like Angelus Apatrida or Aggression, but i think that the ultra thrashers from Crisix are by far the most interesting. Their debut album, The Menance, it’s one of the best releases of a new wave of thrash band. It’s full of anger, heavy and aggressive and pretty hard to compare it to other old-school releases. You can still hear some Testament or Kreator influences here and there. It’s an experience you will surely enjoy even if you’re not really into the new wave of thrash.

First of all, the production. You rarely see a new band with a debut album mixed so good. It’s like they’ve been doing albums since the 80’s. The guitars fit perfectly in their musical style. Not too low, but heavy enough and very, very tight. No mistakes, no missed notes and awesome solos. Busi and Albert are a great guitar duo. The bass is very well mixed, not too loud but not non-existent. It has a couple of highlights, like in Brutal Gadget. The drummer is a monster and you can hear this in every song on this album. Many people over the internet were complaining about the vocals. I agree that the vocals are not the best, but are quite unique and they really fit this band. Even if the album is mostly build on harsh vocals, you can hear a soft part of them on The Last Monkey.

Another thing i love at this band is that they know how to have fun. Some of their lyrics are pretty fun and entertaining. For example, Brutal Gadget (a song about “The Mask”) “They call me Cuban Pete/I’m the king of the rumba beat/When i play my maracas i go chimchikibum chimchikubum. AZUCAR!” or Internal Pollution: “This is the army of barrel and vice. Alcoholic supporters from hell!”. Well, you get the idea. They also have more serious lyrics. Not the best lyrics, but they express pretty good what they had to say, for example Holy Punishment or Mummified by Society.

Every song on this album is worth to be checked out, but my personal highlights from this album are Brutal Gadget, Electric Possession, Ultra Thrash and Mummified by Society. An awesome album, awesome mixing, awesome musicians of an awesome band! You should check them out if you enjoy quality thrash metal of our era.
